Eagles visit Indiana State for exhibition Sunday

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women’s basketball team resumes action Sunday when it travels to Terre Haute, Indiana, to take on Division I foe Indiana State University in an exhibition game.

Sunday’s game, which begins at 1 p.m. (CST), can be listened to on the radio at WPSR 90.7 FM and via the internet at www.820theedge.com.

USI (1-2) is coming off a second-place finish at the Disney Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic this past weekend. The Screaming Eagles defeated Western Oregon University, 71-64, but fell to San Francisco State University, 62-59, and to No. 8-ranked Fort Lewis College, 84-81.

Junior guard Amie Newhart led the Eagles with 15.7 points per game, including 17 points against San Francisco State and 20 points against Fort Lewis.

Senior forward Anaris Sickles added 10.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, while sophomore forward/center Ashton Mertens chipped in 9.3 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard Rinesha Soaper and junior guard Ellen Young added 9.7 and 9.0 points per game, respectively.

The Eagles are 9-9 since 1992 in exhibition contests and are 0-2 against Indiana State in exhibition games since 2000.

Indiana State is 1-0 in the exhibition season after defeating Bellarmine University, 84-52, Sunday in Terre Haute.

Sophomore guard Brittany Schoen and sophomore guard/forward Deja Mattox led the Sycamores in the victory over Bellarmine. Schoen scored a team-high 17 points to go along with four assists, while Mattox added 15 points and five rebounds.

Following its game against Indiana State, the Eagles resume regular-season contests when they travel to Detroit, Michigan, to take on Wayne State University November 15.
