EVANSVILLE, Ind. – TheUniversity of Southern Indiana men’s basketball team announced that senior guard Jared Rehmel is transferring to play for the Screaming Eagles in 2010-11. Rehemel is the second player to commit to the USI men’s basketball team this spring and the third of the year.
The native of Jasonville, Indiana, comes to USI after spending last season at Division I University of Central Arkansas. Rehmel played in 30 games last season for the Bears, starting 29, while averaging 9.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. He had a season-high 21 points against the University of Tennessee-Martin.
Prior to last season at Central Arkansas, Rehmel began his collegiate career at Olney Central College. He was honorable mention NJCAA All-American as a sophomore, in addition to being named All-Region and All-Conference, after averaging 21.3 points in 30 games. The 21.3 points per game ranked 12th nationally in the NJCAA in 2008-09.
The six-foot guard averaged 14.0 points and 2.2 rebounds as a freshman in 2006-07 before missing the 2007-08 season with a back injury.
Rehmel lettered in basketball and baseball at Shakamak High School (Jasonville, Indiana) before entering the college ranks. He averaged 25 points per game as a senior at SHS.
“Jared wanted to finish his career closer to home and we welcome him to USI,” said Head Coach Rodney Watson. “Jared is a very good shooter and we need that skill. We feel his competitive personality matches ours. He is excited to begin summer school with his new teammates, which will give them time to blend together.”
Rehmel joins forward Taylor Wischmeier (Brownstown, Indiana) and guard/forward Austin Davis (Freeport, Illinois) in committing to the Eagles for 2010-11.
