EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team announced the signing of shortstop Benshell Garcia to a national letter of intent for the 2011 season. Garcia is the sixth player to sign with the Screaming Eagles and Head Coach Tracy Archuleta this year.
Garcia comes to USI from Western Oklahoma State College, following in the footsteps of former USI shortstop Wandy Rosario. He helped lead WOSC to the NJCAA Division II World Series Semifinals and a 56-7 overall record after hitting .441.
The native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, also recorded 22 RBIs, 43 runs scored, five home runs, and 10 doubles in 42 games last spring. He also had 15 stolen bases last spring.
“Benshell is very athletic and will be a great addition to this year’s club,” said Archuleta. “He comes from a very successful junior college at Western Oklahoma State Junior College and we are excited to have him here at USI.”
Prior to playing the last two seasons for WOSC, Garcia lettered in baseball at Mastbaum Jules Area Vocational Technical School.
Garcia joins pitcher Silas Dill (Bernie, Missouri); pitcher/infielders James Mulvaney (Mt. Vernon, Illinois) and Justin Ahlbrand (Evansville, Indiana); infielder Ryan Kaczmarksi (Mishawaka, Indiana) and outfielder Bradley Wannemuehler (Evansville, IN) in signing with the Eagles this year.
